What is the MCAS Alt?

A small number of students with the most significant disabilities who are unable to take the standard MCAS tests even with accommodations participate in the MCAS Alternate Assessment (MCAS-Alt). MCAS-Alt consists of a portfolio of specific materials collected annually by the teacher and student.

Can you take MCAS remotely?

Students in grades 3–8 who are learning remotely and require a paper-based MCAS test (PBT) will be asked to attend school to take the tests. Paper versions of the MCAS tests may not be administered in a student’s home and can only be administered in person at the school the student would have attended.

Is opting out illegal? No. State law says the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must give tests to all students. But state law does not say every student must take those tests and it does not provide for any penalties to students who refuse, or their parents.

If students do not wish to participate in an MCAS testing opportunity, and the parents/guardians agree, schools are encouraged to obtain their signatures on a form to document that the opportunity was offered and refused.

Does the MCA matter?

Since the MCA score are used for federal accountability reporting, schools are mandated to get 95 percent of students to take the test, even though students and parents have the right to opt out. In recent years, certain high schools have seen a significant drop in test participants.

Do you have to pass the MCAS to graduate in Massachusetts?

Students must earn a passing score on the grade 10 MCAS tests in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, and one of the high school Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) tests (Biology, Chemistry, Introductory Physics, and Technology/Engineering) to meet their CD requirement.

Can parents opt out of MCAS in Massachusetts?

While Massachusetts is not an “opt out state,” parents and families can still opt out their children from the MCAS and are doing so all across the state. All they need to do is write a letter to the principal and to their child’s teacher saying that they are opting their child out of the tests.
